Dear Alumni and Friends,
A semblance of fall weather reached Texas just in time for Jay Hartzell’s Presidential Inauguration on September 24, 2021. The day was marked by a celebration of our history and a bold vision for the future of our great university. The Forty Acres is bustling with students and faculty energized by the scope of activities taking place on our beautiful campus. Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the community impact of COVID-19 and implement health and safety protocols including proactive community testing and vaccination for students, faculty, and staff members.
On the global engagement front, the university is making great strides, and in recent months we have:
- Created a new Texas Global Alumni Relations unit charged with increasing opportunities for our alumni to engage in meaningful ways with UT students, faculty, and fellow Longhorns. We are eager to hear from you, and I urge all alumni to complete this brief survey;
- Launched the Campus Internationalization Event Fund to support on-campus global engagement events that are co-sponsored by multiple colleges and schools to reach large and diverse audiences;
- Received funding from the U.S Consulate General Jeddah in Saudi Arabia; U.S. Department of State; Ciudad del Saber in Panama; KAIST University and Jeonbuk National University in Korea to implement programs focusing on leadership development, entrepreneurship, and capacity building;
- Committed to serve as a partner institution with the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund Alliance to host threatened or persecuted scholars from around the world on the UT campus.
These exciting developments offer brief insights into our global engagement, and I invite you to continue reading below.

@UTIG's Ian Dalziel thought you could find a little bit of Texas in Antarctica – and he was right, showing the continents were once connected. An amazing discovery now recognized with @geosociety’s highest honor, the Penrose Medal #WhatStartsHere
“What starts here changes the world” was embodied today, with the visit of the President of the Republic of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo. He is one of our great @TexasExes, and we are proud to welcome him back to the 40 Acres! Hook ‘em, President @NitoCortizo! Befitting both the state of Texas and the country of Panama, an international trade with President @NitoCortizo - a couple of @TexasLonghorns jerseys exchanged for a beautiful pen with the colors of Panama & some of the finest coffee in the world! Thank you for the gifts & visit!
